The Importance of Getting it Right – The FIRST Time!

You have been reading for the past few weeks about the unveiling of my new DVD solutions – Get Any Job You Want and Branding Yourself for Maximum Success. I am extremely excited about both these solutions and have spent countless hours packing them full of great information (much of the same information I work with my clients on in my One-on-One Job Search Coaching). I have seen the amazing impact this information has had on clients of mine – helping them find the jobs they wanted and build true stability for themselves and their careers. So, when the DVD’s arrived last week, I was like a kid a Christmas.

Unfortunately, my excitement was short lived. The DVD’s were not put together as promised and (without boring you with what would sound like a rant) they simply were not something I was comfortable putting my name on - much less accepting money for. I know the content is exceptional, but the way it was presented by the production company didn’t do it justice – so I scrapped it. This will push back the release until later this month, but that brings me to my point today – the importance of getting things right the first time.

Just like I coach my clients – first impressions are exceptionally important in your job search. This isn’t simply when you have that first phone interview – it is the entire process: putting together your resume, presenting your background to companies/search firms/colleagues, the networking you do (which should triple in December!)…and the list goes on. You are the product/solution being represented – make sure you get it right the first time!

Whatever You Do – Don’t Put Your Search on Hold For the Holidays!

Every year in the search business, December is one of the busiest times of year. It always amazes me when I hear people are putting their searches on hold because of the holidays. Many companies have use-lose positions and money to hire for before the end of 2008. Those that don’t will be looking to pull the trigger in January 2009 – so get ahead of the curve so you are wrapping up, not ramping up, then. And, don’t discount people feeling festive – you just might get the break you have been looking for!

Taking it to eleven,

Kevin

Resume Writing Service

A good resume won’t get you a job,

but a bad one will keep you from getting it!

It doesn’t matter how many resumes you send out. It doesn’t matter how qualified you know you are for a position. If your resume doesn’t clearly and concisely get the right message across you will NOT get the interview. And, as long as I have been in this business, I have NEVER seen a person get hired without an interview.

It isn’t enough to have a good background you MUST PROVE you’re a

GREAT INVESTMENT

Obama is a Muslim

The importance of getting your story out there first!

No, I am not trying to make a political statement …it would be too little, too late if that were my intent! But, there are a number of lessons that apply to your job search that can be drawn from the recent Presidential campaign. We all remember when the rumor circulated that Obama was a Muslim - a clear attempt to smear the now President-elect. The interesting thing is that, despite the Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s controversial comments hitting the news cycle on more than one occasion and Obama being tied to his church over a number of years, this rumor of being a Muslim kept circulating. His ties to the church should have countered it effectively and they did to a degree, but not entirely. Imagine though, that those two stories were reversed in the news cycle. It is entirely possible that the non-story of his supposedly being Muslim would have never gotten traction.

OK – stay with me here. I promise this isn’t some sort of tirade on politics, the media, etc.! Let’s take this story and apply it to your job search. I hear time and time again from clients in my One-on-One Coaching Program how bad information (the negative side of networking, if you will) has hurt them in an interview. Sometimes it kept them from getting an interview. In many cases, it had to do with an event that took place in their career (maybe a firing, a mistake they made, etc…) that they feel is becoming a monkey on their back. And, simply put, they don’t know how to respond to it effectively. My advice – DON’T.

The idea here is to be pro-active versus re-active. If you know there is potentially damaging information circulating out there about you, head it off at the pass. You don’t speak to it directly though. In the case of Obama, he would have talked about his affiliation with his church more - spoken from a pulpit or two with sound bites that related his experiences growing up in the church. So, when you heard that story about him being Muslim you would have responded with a knee-jerk response of, “That is absurd. I have seen him at this church…or heard him speak about growing up in the church.”

Your job search is no different. If you know there is information out there you need to craft a story (part of your “Go to Market” message) that highlights the exact piece of information that your opponents are going to bring up against you. I work with my clients to craft these same messages so they program the marketplace with their version of the truth. So, when that person who interviewed you hears this negative news AFTER they have interviewed you, they have already formed their opinion of the truth – your story.
